Somali quiz winners win guns, grenades and anti-tank mines

During the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, Somali Islamists ran a quiz which included questions on the Koran and Somali geography.

“I know this answer!!”

But instead of offering the usual “his and her’s pen and watch set” or “authentic Britannia clock used in the war”, the prizes consisted of AK-47’s, assaullt rifles, hand grenades and anti-tank mines.

“The reason the young men were rewarded with weapons is to encourage them to participate in the ongoing holy war against the enemies of Allah in Somalia,” said Sheikh Abdullahi Alhaq the representative of the al-Shabab militant group.

The winning team, from the city’s Farjano district, reportedly won a rifle, two grenades, a landmine and office supplies worth $1,000 (£613). We can only assume office supplies means bullets, combat knives, multi-coloured wire and semtex.

But the runners-up did not go home empty-handed, taking away an AK-47 and bullets.
